Digital transformation (DX)
Japanese デジタルトランスフォーメーション(DX)
A company using data and digital technology to change its products, services and ways of working as its business environment shifts. It is about staying competitive by changing how you meet customers, not just swapping tools.
Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry defines digital transformation as a company responding to fast change by using data and digital technology to transform its products, services, ways of working and organization, and so build a competitive edge. People who used to walk into a restaurant now order through a delivery app, and people who waved for a taxi now tap a taxi app. The thing they want is the same, but the way to reach it has changed. Think of it as keeping the house but building a new road and a new front door.
Watch out Even when most people find the new way easier, some customers will not know how to use it. When you move bookings or orders online, keep the old routes such as phone or walk-in open for a while, and put a clear place to ask for help on your website. Japan's IPA notes that new technology is changing how businesses work and that companies need to move ahead with this change.
