Generative AI creates new text, images, music or video based on material it has learned from. Its answers can sound right and still be wrong, so they need checking.
Generative AI learns from large amounts of human-made writing, pictures and music, and then creates new results in a similar style when you ask. Chatbots that write, tools that draw and apps that compose songs all count. It is like a cook who has seen many dishes and makes a new one from the ingredients you hand over. It is different from search, which finds and shows existing material.
Watch out A result can sound right and still be untrue, and the rights to the material it learned from can raise questions. When you use it for notices or product descriptions, have a person check the facts and the wording, and keep customer data and company secrets out. Also check whether an example in a news story is really generative AI, because not all AI is.
