My Number Card

Japanese マイナンバーカード

The My Number Card is a Japanese photo ID card that shows a person's individual number (My Number). It is used to prove who you are and to log in to online government services.

In Japan, every resident is given a number, and anyone who applies receives a card showing that number with their name, address and photo. A small chip in the card holds an electronic certificate that works like a key to prove who you are online. The number itself may only be used for tasks set by law, such as tax and social security. Think of the card as a house key and the number as a PIN you should not hand out.

Watch out A shop or company may look at the card to check a customer's identity, but should not copy down or photocopy the individual number on the back. Do not add a My Number field to your website's contact form. If a customer asks for help with registration or point programs, point them to the official help desk.
