AGI (artificial general intelligence)

Japanese AGI(汎用人工知能)

AGI (artificial general intelligence) is the name for an AI that can handle many kinds of work the way a person can, instead of being built for one task. There is no agreed definition, and each organization draws the line differently.

AGI (artificial general intelligence) is the name for an AI that can learn and handle many kinds of work the way a person can, rather than an AI built for one job such as writing or drawing. Think of the difference between a student who is strong in one subject and a student who is above average in every subject. There is no agreed definition, though. OpenAI's Charter describes it as highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work, while the Google DeepMind paper Levels of AGI proposes measuring it in stages, separating how well a system performs from how wide a range of tasks it can do.

Watch out A claim that AGI has arrived or is coming soon means different things depending on who said it and which definition they used. Separate an official company announcement from a personal remark by an executive, and check whether anyone outside has verified it. For a small business, the decision today is not guessing when AGI arrives but choosing which part of your own work the AI tools that already exist can help with.
