Sandbox (isolated execution space)

Japanese サンドボックス(隔離された実行環境)

A sandbox is a fenced-off space where a program or AI can only use the folders and resources it is allowed. If it does something wrong, files and systems outside the fence stay safe.

A sandbox keeps a program you cannot fully trust apart from the rest of your computer, letting it use only the files and internet access you allow. It is like letting children play only inside a sandbox so the house stays clean. In AI coding tools, the usual setup lets the AI edit files inside the folder you are working in, but asks you first before it edits other files or uses the internet.

Watch out Settings like "Full access" turn the fence off, so the AI can touch any file on your computer, and OpenAI warns this can lead to data loss. In some tools, such as Claude Code, the sandbox covers only the commands the AI runs and not its other features, so check what is actually inside the fence.
