Opt-out (refusing AI training use)

Japanese オプトアウト

An opt-out is when you tell an AI service not to use your text, images or chats to train its models. Use is usually the default, so you have to turn it off yourself.

An opt-out is the "no" side of a system that treats silence as consent. With AI services it means telling the service not to use what you typed, uploaded or published on your website, such as chats, files, code, text and images, to train its models. It is like a "no junk mail" sticker on a letterbox: without the sticker, leaflets are allowed in. OpenAI says it may use conversations from personal ChatGPT plans for training, and that turning off "Improve the model for everyone" under Settings > Data controls stops new conversations from being used. A website can refuse AI training use with the Google-Extended token in robots.txt.

Watch out The opt-out applies to new conversations from then on, so the safe habit is not to enter important material in the first place. GitHub Copilot's individual plans may also use your inputs and outputs unless you opt out, and opting out does not change the features. Check the plan and the settings before you put work material in.
