GPU (graphics processing unit)
Japanese GPU(グラフィックス処理装置)
A GPU (graphics processing unit) is a chip first made to draw images on screen quickly, and it is good at doing many calculations at the same time. That is why it is widely used to train and run AI.
A GPU is a part of a computer that does calculations. If the CPU, the computer's main brain, is like a few strong workers who finish tasks one after another very quickly, the GPU is like hundreds of workers who split small tasks and do them all at once. It was made to work out the colors of the many dots on a screen together, and because AI also repeats similar calculations a huge number of times, GPUs are widely used to train and run AI.
Watch out When you want to run an AI model on your own computer, check not only whether you have a GPU but also how much GPU memory it has. If the model does not fit in memory, it will not run or will be very slow. Some small models run on the CPU alone without a GPU, but they are faster with one. Free AI demos on the web often share GPUs among many people, so they may limit how much GPU time you can use per day.
