FFmpeg
FFmpeg is free, open-source software that reads, writes and converts video, audio and image files. Many services use it behind the scenes.
FFmpeg is like a toolbox for video and audio files. It opens a file, reads what is inside, converts it to another format and saves it again. Its official site calls it a multimedia framework, made of libraries that other programs use as parts and command-line tools people run directly. A website owner rarely uses it by hand, but it often runs behind services that upload or play video.
For example Anthropic says its AI found a 16-year-old flaw in FFmpeg, in a line of code that automated testing tools had hit five million times without catching the problem. Anthropic itself rated that bug as not critical and hard to turn into a working attack. It is still a good reason to keep the services and servers behind your website updated.
